The V8-powered sports SUV will be available with a choice of 469bhp or 503bhp.

Mercedes-AMG’s new high-performance GLC 63 is now available to order with prices starting at less than £75,000.

The fast SUV, which is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, is based on the recently facelifted GLC and comes with a choice of power outputs and bodystyles. The £74,599 starting price will buy you the ‘standard’ GLC 63 4Matic+ in traditional SUV guise. That means the 4-litre petrol engine pumps out 469 bhp and 0-62 mph takes just four seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

All that performance comes alongside a plethora of standard equipment, too, with 19-inch alloy wheels, Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system and a reversing camera all thrown in. You also get some sporty AMG bodystyling, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and AMG sports seats with heating for the driver and passenger.

But the fixtures and fittings aren’t all cosmetic. As standard, the GLC 63 comes with air suspension that adjusts depending on which driving mode is selected, while there’s an electronic rear differential lock that aids both on- and off-road performance.

If you spend a little extra - roughly £2,500, bringing the total to £77,089 - you can have the Coupe version, which trades boot space for style with a sporty-looking fastback design. Under the skin, though, it’s identical to the SUV, with the same high-performance fittings.

Whichever shape you go for, Mercedes will offer you what it calls the Premium Plus package. Commanding a premium of about £2,500, it adds a glass sunroof, Burmeister surround-sound hi-fi and the Keyless Go Comfort Package, which provides keyless entry as well as the standard push-button keyless ignition system.

If you’ve more money to spend, then you could also upgrade to the £85,855 GLC 63 S 4Matic+ model, which comes with even more power. The same 4-litre V8 is tuned to produce 503 bhp, cutting the 0-62 mph time to 3.8 seconds and removing the speed limiter, allowing the car to hit 173 mph.

And to set it apart from the normal GLC 63, the S model also features a host of aesthetic and equipment upgrades. Larger 20-inch alloy wheels hide red brake callipers, while the sports seats are swapped for ‘performance’ seats. There’s a sports steering wheel, too, and the bodystyling is ramped up even further with new side skirts and matt silver fins in the rear diffuser.

As always, there’s a great range of option packs, too, including the £4,285 AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system, which is only available to those buying the S model. Both versions, however, can be had with the £1,695 Driving Assistance Package Plus, which includes adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe distance to the vehicle in front and blind-spot monitoring to alert the driver when a vehicle is in the blind spots over their shoulders.
