Is that a liftback?
After a couple of batches of photos, the all-new Volkswagen CC is making its spy video debut and by the looks of it the disguised prototype was being benchmarked against a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The outgoing model is still a looker even though it has been on sale since 2008, and the new one is shaping up to be a worthy successor as it already looking very sleek despite the camo.
While the outgoing model is a sedan, we are tempted to say the new version will make the switch to a more practical liftback arrangement since the zipper of the camo extends upwards. The Sport Coupe Concept GTE unveiled last year by VW to preview the second-gen CC was a liftback, so we won’t be too surprised if its production counterpart will be the same. After all, in most cases, concepts are molded after production cars. Since we mentioned the 4 Series Gran Coupe, that one is also a liftback, as is the A5 Sportback, so it would make sense for the CC to take the same path.
Slotting above the regular Passat, the new CC will ride on the same MQB platform and it might come with a slightly longer wheelbase to create a roomier cabin. Hopefully, the sloped roofline is not going to eat into the rear headroom too much, but that’s the sacrifice buyers will have to make since the VW CC will be more about style than anything else.
Most of the hardware is going to be sourced from the Passat, but the interior will probably be a tad more upmarket with extra soft-touch plastics and other tweaks.
Expect to see the next CC at a major auto show in 2017 and go on sale before the year's end. As it’s the case with the current model, the new one will be more expensive than the equivalent Passat.
