Find out which all-wheel drive hot hatch has the most heat.
The 350-horsepower Ford Focus RS is the new kid on the block in the hot hatch segment, and Evo wants to see how the model’s impressive specs perform in the real world. In this clip, the Blue Oval’s all-wheel drive entry lines up against a Volkswagen Golf R, and the rivals demonstrate which one is faster in a half-mile (800-meter) drag race.
On paper, the RS has a massive advantage. Its 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder’s horsepower and torque significantly outguns the Golf R’s 2.0-liter turbo four. However, the VW weighs around 106 pounds (48 kilograms) less than the Blue Oval. Bigger numbers often don’t decide a race because less tangible factors play a big role, like tire grip and the all-wheel-drive system’s ability to put the power down.
You’ll need to watch to discover the winner, but we’ll tease that the Ford grabs an early lead. According to Evo, the Focus RS launches like a rocket ship, and the VW bogs down off the line. Being the front-runner in the first few feet doesn’t necessarily guarantee victory, though. Check out the clip above to see if the Golf R can claw back the early deficit and beat the Blue Oval’s newest hot hatch.
