If you’ve been lamenting the passing of Pontiac back in 2010, this may well make you very happy. Up to a point. But I’ll come back to that.

For now, let’s concentrate on what we’re actually looking at here. It’s based on the upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, recently seen testing - and crashing - at the Nurburgring. The Z/28 is to the Camaro as the Shelby GT350R is to the Mustang: a honed and hunkered, track-focused weapon. Which makes it the perfect basis for a revived Pontiac Trans Am.

Not just any Trans Am, either, but Burt Reynolds’ iconic ride from the Smokey and The Bandit movies. As such, this Z/28 wears glossy black paint, with gold pin striping and the unmistakeable ‘screaming chicken’ graphic on the hood and C-pillars. Plus it has gold wheels.

But the strongest visual link back the 1978 Trans Am used in the movie is the new, beaked nose cone.

There is a problem, though. This is just a rendering. You can always dream, but the fact of the matter is that Pontiac is dead and gone, and so is the Trans Am. Or you could set about your Camaro with a pin of black paint and some fiberglass to create your own replica.
