Porsche finds a new way to tease an upcoming product: brings a camouflaged Panamera Turbo prototype to the Goodwood FoS.
Even though the cat is pretty much out of the bag thanks to a massive “leak”, Porsche is sticking to its plan to host the world premiere of the second-generation Panamera tomorrow. That’s why the prototype Patrick Dempsey drove last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed still had some light camouflage to mask the headlight and taillight design as well as some bits of the interior cabin.
It was a Turbo version which means underneath the hood it had Porsche’s brand new biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine unveiled last month at the Vienna Motor Symposium. It delivers 542 horsepower (550 PS / 404 kW) at 5,750 rpm and a peak torque of 568 pound-feet (770 newton-meters) from 1,960 rpm.
The new engine is considerably more economical than the 4.8-liter is about to replace thanks to the implementation of a cylinder-deactivation system. It works while the engine is at low loads (between 950 rpm and 3,500 rpm) and according to Porsche it slashes fuel consumption by as much as 30 percent. In the new Panamera, the engine is going to be linked to an eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission developed by ZF.
We will have all the details tomorrow when Porsche will (finally) introduce the long-awaited 2017 Panamera. It has been in development over the last five years during which prototypes have covered more than a million miles to get everything ready for the model’s market launch which is likely set for the end of the year. It's going to be joined by a wagon version and there also might be a coupe to serve as a 928 spiritual successor.
