The Ford Mustang is synonymous with American muscle cars so it as little surprise that noted car collector Jay Leno couldn't refuse a chance to drive a recently restored 1969 Mustang Boss 429.
In the latest installment of Jay Leno's Garage, the former Tonight Show host gets behind the wheel of a classic Mustang which was painstakingly restored by Marcus Anghel of Anghel Restorations.
Originally purchased for $4934.76, the Mustang Boss 429 was built under contract by Car Craft and featured a modestly revised exterior with a unique front fascia, a front spoiler, and a sporty hood scoop. The model also has revised fenders and the obligatory Boss 429 badging.
Bigger changes occurred underneath the hood as power is provided by a 7.0-liter (429 cubic inch) semi-hemi / shotgun V8 engine that was rated at approximately 375 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers don't sound too impressive but the figures are widely believed to be underestimated.
The engine was originally designed for use in NASCAR so it had to be shoehorned under the hood of the Mustang. As a result, the battery had to be relocated to the trunk and a handful of components had to be redesigned.
After a short test drive, Leno remarks it's a "very impressive car" that was much better than he had expected.
