Actor was crushed by Jeep Grand Cherokee under recall.
The parents of actor Anton Yelchin are planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Associated Press reports, after the 27-year old was crushed by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee when it rolled down his driveway and pinned him against a pillar. A coroner ruled his death an accident.
Prior to Yelchin’s death, FCA issued a recall for the Grand Cherokee, stemming from a potentially confusing shifter design that could lead drivers to not put it in Park properly before exiting the vehicle. A total of 1.1 million 2014 to 2015 Grand Cherokees worldwide are affected by the recall. An investigation by the government found 266 crashes that injured 68 people had been caused by the fault as of late June. Yelchin, best known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek reboot, died on June 19. It's thought FCA sent out recall notices just a few days before that date.
In a statement, FCA gave its sympathies to Yelchin’s family, but said it couldn’t comment on the plans for a lawsuit.
In an additional development, Yelchin’s parents Victor and Irina have filed to be made administrators of their son’s estate. At the time of his death he held $641,000 in personal assets and equity of $731,000 in his home, but left no will.
