German tuner shows its love for the VW Golf R with a meaty 450-hp package.

It’s a crazy world we’re living in, with the Golf GTI (in Clubsport S trim) being more powerful than the all-paw R. VW is expected to address this “issue” with a production version of the R400 concept which some say will actually be called R420 to reflect its 420-hp output and will be based on the facelifted Golf due later this year. However, recent reports are indicating the folks from Wolfsburg have axed the model in light of the nasty Dieselgate.

Only time will tell whether the Golf R420 will become a reality, but meanwhile the aftermarket specialists at O.CT Tuning are already offering something with even more punch. The “muscled beast” as it has been baptized by the tuner ups the power ante of the turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine from the series 300 horsepower (221 kilowatts) and 280 pound-feet (380 newton meters) to as much as 450 hp (331 kW) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm).

If you don’t want to go all out, O.CT also has some intermediary power packages which will lift output to 370 hp / 460 Nm, 378 hp / 480 Nm, and 395 hp / 505 Nm.

There’s no word about performances, but you can imagine the 450-hp version is substantially quicker than the standard Golf R which runs to 62 mph (100 kph) in 4.9 seconds with the optional six-speed, dual-clutch gearbox or 5.3 seconds with the manual. The regular version is electronically-capped at 155 mph (250 kph), but VW R development chief Guido Sever said a few years ago the unrestricted version can actually do 168 mph (270 kph). With the tuned version having 50 percent more power than the standard car, it should nicely reflect on the hatchback’s maximum velocity.

Unsurprisingly, O.CT Tuning says it can optimize other members of the VW Group fitted with the third-generation EA888 engine, such as the SEAT Leon CUPRA and Audi’s S3 and TTS.

A MUSCLED BEAST powered by O.CT TUNING – THE GOLF VII RSince 1994 O.CT Tuning operates as its own department within the 1985 founded company OBERSCHEIDER in Lustenau, located in the northwest of the Austrian state Vorarlberg near the Austrian-Swiss frontier. Their intention: to “grill” the 2.0 liter-motor of the VAG-group with its original 300 HP as well as 380 Nm of maximum torque very thoroughly. The magnificent result is due to the engine dynometer, which means the development turned out very complex and expensive. Usually manufacturers walk a rocky road in order to motorize a special edition above average. Any possible performance data has been determined under the pressure of an extreme permanent load. These basic parameters speaks for themselves: 450 HP and 550 Nm of maximum torque. The length performance of this edited Golf VII R with four wheel drive is beyond belief and it would be a challenge to find an appropriate match. Sports car drivers are advised to give way, if this muscled beast is recognized in the rear back mirror. It is recommended to let it pass by or a big disappointment is in store.

378 HP / 480 Nm, 395 HP / 505 Nm as well as the final stage with 450 HP and 550 Nm.
