The Ford Fathom and the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform that underpins it are vital to the automaker’s future. It’s the Blue Oval’s answer to China. But CEO Jim Farley has cautioned that launching the truck will not be easy.

At the recent Automotive News Congress event, according to Automotive News, the executive said:

'We haven’t landed the plane on mass production of UEV [Universal Electric Vehicle] yet. It’s going to be a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time.'

Ford first announced its mid-size electric pickup and the UEV in August 2025, with Farley calling the vehicle a “Model T moment” for the automaker. The Fathom is scheduled to launch sometime next year.

The automaker has made no official announcement about any potential delays, and Motor1 has reached out for clarification. A Ford spokesperson has told us that there is no change to the Fathom's expected launch in 2027.

What Makes The Fathom So Different?

Ford is designing its Universal Electric Vehicle platform to be less complex than existing architectures, all to reduce weight and cost. The platform requires 50 percent fewer connections and 50 percent fewer hoses. It has 20 percent fewer parts than a typical Ford vehicle.

The wiring harness is 4,000 feet shorter than the one used in Ford’s first EV. FoMoCo is also changing how it assembles the vehicles with the Universal EV Production System.

It separates production into three branches: the rear of the vehicle, the front of the vehicle, and the structural battery, which will include the interior. The three branches then come together for the final assembly.

Ford says this new assembly process takes up less space, is faster, and is more ergonomic for its employees. Right now, the platform will allow the automaker to assemble the electric vehicle 40 percent faster than other products currently built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly plant.

Production workers will not have to strain, twist, and reach as much as before, with vehicles arriving in front of operators as kits. These kits will include all the parts oriented correctly, instead of reaching behind them for components.

Ford has made some bold promises for its mid-size electric pickup. The EV will be as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost and offer more passenger space than the 2025 Toyota RAV4.

The automaker announced the name and price in August, and it will start under the promised $30,000. The starting MSRP is $29,945, including the $1,595 destination charge, but it’s unclear what features it will offer at that price point.

Ford is focusing on the truck's aerodynamic efficiency, with shallower bolt holes underneath the vehicle and narrower side mirrors. The truck is expected to arrive as a 2028 model, with deliveries possible before the end of next year.
