The Mazda6 remained on European markets until 2022, in both saloon and estate body styles, but now it comes back to us in a revised form. In fact, the Mazda EZ-6 just unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show has nothing to do with the previous Mazda6, but was born as an electric saloon from the Changan Mazda joint venture.

The Mazda EZ-6 embraces the characteristic Kodo design language, but with a partially illuminated grille and retractable door handles. We see some Jaguar traits in the taillights and possibly also in the headlights. Above the rear light bar is an active spoiler that we did not expect to see on a saloon.

Curvy lines for the electric/plug-in sedan

Resting on aerodynamic 19-inch wheels, the Mazda EZ-6 has a large panoramic glass roof and frameless doors, as can be seen in our photos taken in Beijing. Reports from China indicate that the electric/plug-in hybrid saloon is based on the Changan Shenlan SL03, but with a more sophisticated interior.

The cabin does not appear to have much in common with Mazda products sold worldwide, which would explain the Chinese connection. Still, it looks like a pleasant environment and the full-length 'floating' centre console is interesting.

373 miles on electric power

The official images are accompanied by some early specifications. The Mazda EZ-6 has a rear-wheel drive configuration as an electric model. It has a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a multi-link rear suspension. The unspecified battery pack is capable of a range of 373 miles according to the CLTC cycle. The plug-in hybrid can travel 621 miles before running out of fuel and battery.

In terms of dimensions, it is 4.92 metres long, 1.89 metres wide and 1.48 metres high. This makes it slightly larger than the old Mazda6. In this regard, Mazda has already ruled out replacing the 6 we all know with a new generation on the company's RWD platform with straight-six engines. For now, this architecture is used exclusively by four SUVs: CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90.

The EZ-6 will go on sale in China after its public debut this week at the Beijing Motor Show. It is unlikely that the plug-in electric/hybrid mid-size saloon will be exported to other markets.
