After years of being under-appreciated, prices of the Porsche 944 are really starting to rise, particularly the later iterations. Apparently even Porsche Klassik knows that these front-engine models are increasingly admired because the division has a freshly restored example.

Porsche Klassik paid £16,850 for this 1991 944 S2. This was the ultimate naturally aspirated version of the model using a 3.0-litre inline-four-cylinder making 208 bhp.

This one had some rare features that made it particularly attractive to Porsche Klassik. First, where you usually find leather in these vehicles, this 944 S2 has fabric seats. A fantastic looking Blaupunkt stereo and separate equalizer dominate the lower section of the centre stack. There's a car phone next to it. The M030 option gives the suspension Koni adjustable shocks at both ends.

The restoration here is more akin to what a normal buyer would do to make a good driver, rather than more comprehensive work to return it to factory fresh. There's a full repaint in the original Cobalt Blue Metallic, including taking the opportunity to replace the body's rubber seals when the doors and glass are off.

The interior received a thorough upgrade, too. The seat bolsters were looking a little rough, but Porsche Klassik sourced new-old stock fabric to recover them. With the cloth off, a technician also replaced the foam to make them feel like new.

Mechanically, this 944 S2 didn't need much. The biggest actual flaw was a non-functioning air conditioner that required a new compressor and a fresh charge of refrigerant. There were also the expected tweaks for buying a used car like an oil change and a new set of tyres.
