The UK is outside the European Union now but does not want to be outside of the battery industry.
Britishvolt and AMTE Power, two British start-ups, have announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a joint battery cell gigafactory in the UK.
The idea, as well as the name of Britishvolt, reminds us of Northvolt in Sweden.
The cost of the joint Britishvolt GigaPlant project is estimated at £4 billion (€4.5 billion/$4.9 billion), which requires not only government support, but also a strong partnership with the automotive industry - like with Jaguar Land Rover.
The target manufacturing capacity= will be 30-35 GWh annually, although initially rather around 10 GWh annually, starting in 2023 (the first phase will start if the duo will raise about £1.2 billion in 2021 according to Autocar).
Britishvolt seems to be a company created solely for the idea of the gigafactory, while AMTE Power is already producing lithium-ion batteries for specialised markets in Thurso, Scotland, having about 50 employees. The company says that it "has designed a large-scale 1-5 GWh/annum production facility, which is scheduled to be online in 2023".

The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) accelerates the industrialisation of technologies which will help to realise net-zero emission vehicles. It is at the heart of the UK government’s commitment to end the country’s contribution to global warming by 2050.
Since its foundation in 2013, APC has funded over 110 low-carbon projects, involving more than 290 partners. The technologies developed in these projects are projected to save over 179 million tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of removing the lifetime emissions from 6.5 million cars.
APC projects have helped generate economic benefits too. Companies involved have seen turnover increases of 14–17%, with new jobs increasing by 8–10%. Together these have generated a 17% Gross Value Added uplift.
