Two new tuning kits are available, taking the car's power to over 200 bhp.

The Mazda MX-5 is often regarded as the perfect sports car. If there's ever a complaint about it, it's that the little rear-wheel-drive drop-top could do with a little bit more power.

Thankfully, aftermarket tuning is a thing, and Mazda specialists BBR have now launched their latest upgrades for the car.

The two new options being offered by the Brackley firm build upon the 181 bhp version of the MX-5 and can be available fitted, or to fit yourself if you're handy with a spanner.

The Super 200 and Super 220 packages produce (go on, guess...) 202 bhp and 221 bhp respectively (you weren't expecting that, were you?) and add an extra 10 lb-ft of torque – an extra 5 lb-ft in Super 220 trim.

To up the power they add a BBR four into one high flow, tuned length stainless steel exhaust manifold; a BBR Cold Air Intake System; a BBR K&N high flow air filter; and a BBR Custom StarChip ECU remap – the programming/logging hardware and software are included for self-install customers.

For the Super 220 version BBR 2019 spec bespoke high-performance camshafts, valve springs and retainers are also added for that extra little boost.

They're the standard toys, but also available optionally is a BBR 2.5 inch centre exhaust section with a choice of rear silencers; and a four into one high flow, tuned length stainless steel exhaust manifold, incorporating a performance catalytic converter.

"This is the first time that over 100 bhp per litre has been achievable from a normally aspirated Mazda MX-5 motor without internal modifications. It’s an amazing accomplishment for a predominately standard engine," said BBR Managing Director Neil Mckay. "And additional development has seen BBR achieve more than 110 bhp per litre with the inclusion of our bespoke performance camshafts, which is astonishing for a road-friendly engine that now also produces over 150 lb.ft from just 3000 rpm."

"As Mazda improves the stock Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre petrol engine extracting useful power gains from normally aspirated tuning becomes more of a challenge, but that makes the end results even more rewarding” he comments."

The Super 200 package is available for £1245.00 excluding VAT, and the Super 220 package is £2235.00 excluding VAT. Neither of those prices include fitting, should you opt for it.
