Buyers looking to get their hands on the new Peugeot 208 can now place their orders online, with a deposit of just £500 guaranteeing a spot on the waiting list.

The latest generation of Peugeot’s Fiesta-rivalling supermini was revealed earlier this year, and won’t arrive in the UK until the start of next year, but keen clients are already able to reserve one of two variants. Those looking for petrol power can put their names down for a high-spec GT Line model with the PureTech 100 engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, while those preferring a zero-emission electric model will be able to reserve the e-208.

Officially, the order books for the new model don’t open until late summer, but when Peugeot does start taking proper orders, the company will contact anyone with a reservation to confirm their order choice and find out whether they would like to buy their car online or through a dealer. Then, once the first demonstrators have arrived in the UK, they will be invited to arrange a test drive, after which they will have up to seven days to cancel their order should they change their minds. If they do, Peugeot says their £500 deposit will be refunded in full.

Those less sure of whether they want to commit to buying a vehicle, meanwhile, are being invited to visit the online “showroom”, where Peugeot has posted information about the car. The system also allows potential customers to “register their interest”, allowing the manufacturer to keep them up-to-date with the latest developments regarding the new hatchback.

When it arrives next year, Peugeot will introduce a full range that includes a variety of petrol- and diesel-powered derivatives, as well as a full range of trims. These will supplement the petrol-engined GT Line and e-208 models already available to reserve. The e-208 will come with a 100kW (134 bhp) motor and a 50kWh battery, offering drivers a range of up to 211 miles from a full charge.

David Peel, the managing director of Peugeot’s UK operation, said the launch of the next-generation supermini was a source of excitement for those connected with the brand.

“We’re delighted that our all-new Peugeot 208 reservation site has now opened,” he said. “This is a hugely exciting model for us. Not only does the all-new 208 deliver on our promise of sharp styling, uncompromising quality and an instinctive driving experience, but the 208 features our first new-generation fully electric vehicle, the all-new Peugeot e-208.”
