The Fiat 124 Spider is a Mazda MX-5 with a small genetic difference under the bonnet and a different exterior. Mazda is known as the go-to car for aspiring racers around the world – building goodwill with drivers for several years. The Fiat 124 – first introduced for the 2017 model year in its modern-day iteration – doesn’t have years of amateur racing history to its name. However, that could soon change. Fiat could enter the race car arena with the Abarth 124 GT4 – an Italian answer to the Mazda MX-5 Cup race car.

Fiat News You Need To Know:

A new video from the MattyB727 YouTube channel shows a tricked-out and camouflaged 124 GT4 attacking Monza like a swarm of angry bees. The GT4 has all the hallmarks of a serious race car. The car sports what looks like a modified front fascia, canards, upgrade front wings, a massive wing, and an equally massive rear diffuser. It sounds potent, too.

The video’s description hints at the car’s powertrain, though it’s just speculation at this point. It’s suggested the Abarth 124 GT4 will sport a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine from the Alfa Romeo 4C – an impressive and quirky vehicle in its own right. However, Abarth will tune this mill to produce 380 horsepower – which is a lot for the two-seat sports car. This has yet to be confirmed by the automaker, and it’s unlikely Abarth will provide an answer until it’s ready – which could be a while.

Rumours suggest the Abarth 124 GT4 will participate in the Italian GT Championship, which kicks off at the end of next April. There are plenty of auto shows between now and then to unveil such a race car.

With the Abarth 124 GT4 in its early development stages, it’s unclear if the automaker is planning a Mazda MX-5 Cup-like race series. If Fiat and Abarth hope to achieve similar popularity, it will have to work hard marketing the 124 GT4 while keeping costs reasonable.
