The British carmaker has announced that the new Corsa GSi will start at £18,995.
It seems that no one has told Vauxhall about the Suzuki Swift Sport’s recent problems – the British carmaker has just announced the price of its new Corsa GSi, and the hot hatch is set to cost from £18,995 on the road.
When the Swift Sport was announced back in April with a £17,999 list price, Suzuki UK was rather ‘swiftly’ forced into offering an embarrassing £1,500 discount on the car before it even went on sale following criticism. The Volkswagen Polo GTI starts from £19,500 and the much-lauded Ford Fiesta ST starts at £18,995.
Standard specification on the new Corsa GSi includes 17-inch bi-colour cut alloy wheels, a GSi rear roof spoiler and sporty front grille, bumper and side sills.
Vauxhall says that the GSi also gets tinted rear windows, carbon effect exterior mirrors and grille bar, and LED daytime running lights. Inside, the package is topped off with sports-style front seats, leather steering wheel and the Navi R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system that offers Apple and Android connectivity.
Vauxhall is also offering the sporty hatch with the £1,900 GSi Plus Pack, which consists of 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, Recaro leather seats and bi-xenon.
Built on a Corsa VXR chassis, the new GSi is powered by a 1.4-litre turbo engine with 148 bhp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 8.9 seconds, with strong performance right through to its maximum speed of 129 mph. Vauxhall says that the GSi’s short-ratio six-speed gearbox helps the car to accelerate from 50-70 mph in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds.
In addition to delivering high performance, the Corsa GSi is also part of Vauxhall’s latest Euro 6d-TEMP range of engines, offering fuel economy of 49.6 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions from 139 g/km.
Still, hard not to imagine that the GSi is going to have its work cut out when priced exactly the same at the Fiesta ST with its 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit producing 197 bhp, 47.1 mpg on the combined cycle and a 0-62 mph time that’s 2.4 seconds quickers at 6.5 sec.
The Vauxhall Corsa GSi is available to order now, with deliveries starting in September.
