A Fiesta ST with dual-clutch automatic is also planned.
We've recently driven the new Fiesta ST and very much enjoyed the handling and verve of the small hot hatch with its cheeky three-cylinder engine. But it seems that Ford isn't planning to stop there, with hints at an even sportier RS version on the way.
Speaking to Australian magazine Motoring during the international launch of the Fiesta ST, Ford Performance Europe boss, Leo Roeks, hinted that the even sportier variant of the model is currently under development together with a dual-clutch automatic version of the ST. According to the publication, the first-ever Fiesta RS is due to launch by the end of the decade, most likely mid-2019.
Nothing is really known for the car at the moment, but we expect to see a larger engine under the hood. The ST is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo unit with 198bhp and 214lb ft of torque, the same output as the previous-gen Fiesta ST. The motor is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox, at least for now.
We say for now because Motoring also reports that Ford is developing a dual-clutch automatic option that is actually close to introduction, but is currently being held back because of the bad reputation of Ford's Powershift gearbox.
The Fiesta ST, is a tech-laden hot hatch and currently the most powerful of the Fiesta range. It features an optional Quaife mechanical limited-slip differential, the world's first patented force-vectoring springs, a launch control function and an exhaust system with active valves. You also get Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system, an optional Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, lane-keep assist and traffic sign recognition.
