Ford has opened the order books for its new Active-badged version of its Fiesta supermini – a jacked up, rugged version of the car designed to appeal to SUV buyers. Pricing has been announced too – the range starts at £17,790 for the Active 1, with the B&O Play starting at £19,190, and the Active X at £20,290.

The car's appearance is enhanced in the name of lifestyle with a new bodykit, 'Active' badging, rough-road suspension with increased ride height, roof rails, front fog lights and 17 inch five-spoke alloy wheels.

All options in the Active lineup are powered by Ford's award-winning 1-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which comes in four different states of tune – 84bhp, 99bhp, 123bhp, or 138bhp. A 1.5-litre diesel is also available with either 84bhp or 118bhp on tap. Stop-start technology is fitted to all cars to improve economy – there's also an active grille shutter for both petrol and diesel engines that enhances efficiency by helping the motors to warm up more quickly.

There's a lot of tech on offer in the new Fiesta Active too. There are three selectable drive modes – Eco, Normal and Slippery – which, along with electronic stability control and hill start assist, help the car to handle difficult terrain.

For when you're on the road, there's lane-keep assist, rear seatbelt reminders, auto headlamps, a heated windscreen and tyre pressure monitoring. If you go for the B&O Play model, you'll also get a top-notch Bang & Olufsen stereo entertainment system with 360-degree sound and 10 speakers.

The B&O Play also adds a yellow colour theme and more tech such as cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a centre console with armrest and illuminated cup holders, plus a 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster screen with traffic sign recognition.

The range-topping Active X comes with partial-leather upholstery with heated front seats, power-folding door mirrors with puddle lights, Ford Sync 3 navigation system with DAB radio and 8-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and start and a parking camera with rear sensors. The Active X, along with the Active 1, can also be optioned with a two-part panoramic sliding roof.
