Renault's Koleos has been on sale for less than a year, but now the French manufacturer has added a new trim level to the lineup, and it's loaded with toys.

The new range-topping trim is called the 'Initiale Paris' and is priced from £36,700 on the road. It's trimmed with luxurious two-tone Nappa leather, while an Amethyst paint colour is an exclusive option, available for £550.

Of course, asking just short of 40 grand for a Renault is, frankly, a lot, but the company has certainly tried to make the investment worthwhile. As well as the fancy leather and special paint, there's exclusive 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels, a 13-speaker Bose sound system, full LED headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, heated and cooling cup holders, a powered automatic tailgate, one-touch easy folding rear seats, an opening panoramic sunroof and an 8.7-inch portrait screen with R-Link2 infotainment including integrated Apple Carplay and Android Auto and it's all standard. Well, by standard, we mean it comes with the range-topping Initiale Paris trim. So it is standard, but it isn't.

Inside there's plenty of space, as you'd expect from a car based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's Common Module Family C/D platform, which has also been put to use on the Kadjar, Megane and Scenic. Five passengers can be carried in complete comfort – and safety, because the Koleos has Renault's customary five-star crash safety rating. That's all well and good, but for a car of this size you'd expect seven seats, at least as an option.

Power comes from a 175bhp 2-litre diesel engine sending power to all four wheels via Renault's Auto X-Tronic transmission. It's good for an official rating of 47.9mpg and 156g/km CO2. The most powerful diesel unit in the Renault lineup produces 280lb ft torque at 2,000rpm.

Order books for the Renault Koleos Initiale Paris are now open and deliveries are expected to begin in the spring.
