We at Motor1 already know how amazing the Ford Focus RS. A little while back, we took it to meet the new Honda Civic Type R, and the fantastic Ford proved more than a match for the hairy hot Honda. For many, it’s already a cult car.
But even though many rivals can’t even match the talents of today’s car, Ford has decided to make the Focus RS itself even better – with the launch of the Focus RS Edition, a version claimed to “deliver even more fun”.
It does this through adding a standard limited-slip Quaife differential. This is a mechanical device that helps improve traction at the front wheels, so the Focus RS can deliver more of its power with less wheelspin or traction control interaction.
It also helps Ford precisely control exactly how much drive is delivered to each front wheel, improving stability and helping drivers deploy even more of the 2.3-litre 345bhp turbo engine’s considerable power. It works in conjunction with the existing Focus RS’ all wheel drive, dynamic torque vectoring system and torque vectoring control to give a genuinely formidable mechanical package that performance connoisseurs should be bowled over by.
“For hardcore driving enthusiasts, the additional mechanical grip offered by the Quaife LSD will make it even easier to carry speed through a corner on the track, and maximise acceleration on the way out,” says Ford of Europe performance director Leo Roeks.
“The new setup also delivers greater mechanical stability and control when braking hard, and will help drivers set the car up for power-slides using Drift Mode,” Roeks said. “The Focus RS Edition takes our ‘fun to drive’ philosophy to a new level for an everyday road car.”
Of course, enthusiasts may want a bit more visual clout to show they world what fine taste they have. So Ford has given the Focus RS Edition, only available in Nitrous Blue paint, a matt black roof, door mirrors and roof spoiler, blue RS logos on the spoiler sides, black 19-inch alloys and Recaro shell seats with exclusive Nitrous Blue detailing.
There’s more carbon fibre inside, rear privacy glass, Active City Stop for safety and a heated steering wheel in case Sparco driving gloves are not enough to keep wannabe-racers’ hands warm in winter.
