Volkswagen has launched a scrappage scheme – and if you use it to buy a zero-emissions e-Golf electric car, you can save a total of £10,000 off the car’s list price. Eligibility? Anyone who’s owned a pre-2010 diesel car for more than six months.

The Volkswagen Scrappage Upgrade scheme is comprehensive, covering all of the firm’s biggest-selling models. And while the £5,500 on the e-Golf, combined with the government’s £4,500 Plug-in Car Grant, gives a headline five-figure total saving, the incentives on other bigger-selling models are just as impressive.

The full Golf range, for example, enjoys a £4,000 scrappage incentive saving, while the new Polo comes with a £2,800 saving. In-demand models such as the Tiguan come with a £4,000 discount and the Sharan MPV has a £6,000 price cut.

Volkswagen’s electric car and plug-in hybrid models are also included in the deal. There’s a £5,000 Scrappage Upgrade offer on the Golf GTE, £6,000 on the Passat GTE and even the e-Up has £3,300 off (and the Up city car itself comes with a £1,800 saving.

VW says the trade-in diesel model will definitely be scrapped, and the scheme runs from now until 31 December. Alison Jones, director of Volkswagen UK, is bullish, saying: “With this new Scrappage Upgrade scheme, there’s never been a better time to step up from an older diesel into one of our new, lower emission range of Volkswagens.”
