Pictures might be worth a thousand words, but at least with video we get to hear Chevrolet’s forthcoming ZR1 prototype. We offered up no less than 46 spy shots featuringcamouflage and wings in action just yesterday, but we (and if we’re any judge, you) can’t get enough of GM’s king-of-kings Corvette. Plus, it’s always a pleasure to hear a V8 popping around the Nurburgring.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t the greatest for much of this footage, but bravo to the driver for soldiering on in what looks to be something of a snow storm. Even during the calmer moments it would seem the ‘Vette isn’t receiving too much exercise, but there’s still enough throttle to hear the engine in action. Rumours say the new ZR1 will have a DOHC V8, which would be only the second time such an engine has graced the iconic American sports car.

Other ZR1 news:

We know GM filed paperwork to trademark LT5 last year for a forthcoming Corvette. The last engine to bear the designation was a 5.7-litre DOHC V8 for the 1990-1995 Corvette ZR-1, which was easily identified merely by its high-revving exhaust note compared to pushrod L98s and LT1s of the day. These days GM is revving its pushrods much higher, and while the sound of the prototype is a touch different to our ears than the current Corvette Z06, that doesn’t mean it’s a completely new engine.

There’s little doubt the next ZR1 will up the ante from the Z06. The question is whether it will be the recipient of this new GM engine, or if that honour will go to the mid-engined Corvette that’s also in development. We expect Chevrolet to unveil the ZR1 later this year, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
