It's a crossover for people who don't like crossovers.

Back in 2015, Chevrolet arrived at Auto Shanghai with the futuristic Find New Roads (FNR) concept that had absolutely zero chance of ever going into production. Fast forward to present day, the showcar has evolved into something more down to earth, called 'FNR-X', created by the same folks from General Motors’ Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint venture.

Here's a quick look at the original UFO-shaped concept:

Chevy doesn’t actually call it a crossover. Instead, it refers to the FNR-X as an “all-purpose sports concept vehicle” and, dare we say, it's done a great job with the bold styling and the high-tech interior cabin. It’s more than just a pretty face as the concept car adopts a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of switching between combustion engine and the electric motor.

The Chevy FNR-X boasts an active suspension smart enough to automatically adjust the vehicle’s ground clearance depending on the road conditions. Selectable V (Versatility) and S (Sport) driving modes come to enhance the concept’s versatility, while active aero wizardry boosts efficiency and performance. Indeed, both front and rear spoilers, along with the side skirts, change their position up or down depending on the active driving mode. In addition, there are active shutters built into the front grille along with switchable wheel blades that adjust on their own to reduce wind drag during high-speed driving. To further optimise the aerodynamic body, there are sleek side cameras instead of clunky mirror caps.

Opening the scissor doors will provide you access to the uncluttered interior cabin packing a multitude of OLEDs for ambient lighting. A large hexagonal-shaped touchscreen serves as the infotainment system and there are a multitude of other screens all over the dashboard. The driver also has an entirely digital instrument cluster, while the amount of physical controls has been kept down to a minimum.

The list of features goes on, with an augmented reality head-up display and a smart navigation system that can predict the complexity of the road conditions and adjust the route accordingly. Optical and acoustic sensors work together with a complex driver assistance system to give the vehicle some level of autonomous driving capabilities.

Alas, as impressive as it is, the Chevy FNR-X is unfortunately still only a concept.

Chevrolet FNR-X Concept Vehicle Makes Global Debut at Auto Shanghai 2017

The Chevrolet FNR-X all-purpose sports concept vehicle made its world premiere today at Auto Shanghai 2017. Chevrolet previously showcased the Chevrolet-FNR (Find New Roads) concept vehicle developed by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint venture at Auto Shanghai 2015.

“The Chevrolet-FNR is one of Chevrolet’s most forward-thinking concept cars, truly exemplifying the brand’s passion for innovation and ingenuity,” said Alan Batey, GM executive vice president and president of GM North America and Global Chevrolet. “The FNR-X builds on the design and technology showcased on the original FNR concept and embodies the belief at Chevrolet’s core that anything is possible.”

The futuristic-looking FNR-X draws inspiration from and exemplifies the century-old brand's combination of performance and versatility to meet multipurpose mobility demands.

The concept vehicle retains Chevrolet's signature powerful, attractive design language through clear, masculine lines. Dynamic digital LED headlights and taillights combine the brand's characteristic dual-element light design with the mortise and tenon joint used in traditional Chinese woodwork, delivering a high-tech, artistic feeling underpinned by the spirit of craftsmanship. Unique rear-hinged doors that can be controlled remotely ensure easy entry and exit.

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can switch between its engine and electric motor, while offering two driving modes: V (Versatility) and S (Sport). The FNR-X can modify its suspension and handling profile thanks to an adaptive suspension that adjusts ground clearance on demand.

The model’s intelligent adaptive control systems, active grille shutters and switchable wheel blades adjust automatically during high-speed driving, reducing wind drag. The outstanding aerodynamic performance is further enhanced by front and rear spoilers and side skirts that move up and down in accordance with different driving modes.

The FNR-X has a creative, imaginative interior design that matches its exterior. Intelligent ambient lighting changes colors to match driving modes, making the cabin more user-friendly. Featuring high-tech fabrics, the cabin’s hexagonal textures were inspired by graphene crystal structures – signifying the beginning of a new era for new energy.

The steering wheel and dashboard have a sporty integrated design. Seats ride on multipurpose rails and have fixed components to individualize storage space. Split-folding second-row seats maximize cargo capacity.

The FNR-X supports intelligent connected mobility for individual users. It incorporates an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) dynamic display system, a unique intelligent speech interaction system and an ID-customizable information system.

With the all-terrain Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS), in addition to optical and acoustic recognition sensors all over its body, the FNR-X provides highly autonomous driver assistance by choosing the best route based on its predictions for complex road conditions. Its panoramic intelligent augmented reality head-up display offers a clear 270-degree posterior-lateral view to maximize safety and driving pleasure.
