Mercedes-Benz is confident it is “the first truck manufacture to bring the Apple CarPlay infotainment system into its vehicles”. While this might be technically true, Scania is also introducing the technology for its trucks, tempering its claim by saying it’s “among the first in the industry” to do so.
The German company says the connectivity will be offered for the Actros, Antos, and Arocs models equipped with the Multimedia Radio Touch radio system. Apple CarPlay will allow the driver to “safely and conveniently use his iPhone and a variety of apps while on the move”. Android users will probably be happy to hear the system also works with MirrorLink, the counterpart to Apple CarPlay.
Just as in cars, the system can be operated through an advanced voice control function, which also can be used to browse and use the different applications, such as telephone, music, maps, news, iTunes, and so on.
Naturally, Scania’s system will be identical and will be available for customers who have a Scania Infotainment System with a seven-inch touch screen and the Voice Control Option. Devices from Apple with iOS 7 or higher can be paired via USB cable, giving access to Siri voice controls, as well as Apple Maps, Apple Music, Phone, Messages, and a variety of third party apps. The Apple CarPlay support will be introduced in June 2017 and earlier versions of the infotainment system can be updated, if they have voice recognition.
So, what’s the next step – autonomous self-driving functions in trucks..?

- Mercedes-Benz brings the infotainment system CarPlay™ from Apple into Actros, Antos and Arocs
- The radio system Multimedia Radio Touch enables smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay™
- Navigation made possible by connecting the smartphone
Stuttgart - Mercedes-Benz was the first truck manufacture to bring the Apple CarPlay™ infotainment system into its vehicles. This makes Mercedes-Benz a trendsetter when it comes to smartphone integration for truck drivers.
Apple CarPlay™ is available as of now in conjunction with the Multimedia Radio Touch radio system in the current models of the Mercedes-Benz Actros, Antos and Arocs. It allows the driver to safely and conveniently use his iPhone® and a variety of apps while on the move. For maximum compatibility with Android smartphones, the Multimedia Radio Touch can also be used with "MirrorLink™" - the counterpart to Apple CarPlay™.
Four menus are available to the driver via the Multimedia Radio Touch. He or she may choose between the radio, media, call or connect menu. As soon as the driver chooses the connect menu and connects his smartphone via the USB slot, a selection of apps will be displayed via CarPlay™ or MirrorLink™.
With Apple CarPlay™, the following apps are available to the driver: Telephone, music, maps, news, iTunes®, podcasts and audio books, as well as further accredited apps. Thanks to the advanced voice function, the driver can control the connect menu via Siri® and can, for example, easily and safely make telephone calls while driving. Or can navigate from his or her point of departure to desired destination via the Apple maps app, just by using the voice command.
Thanks to MirrorLink™, drivers with Android smartphones can use the Multimedia Radio Touch radio system as well. As soon as the driver connects his smartphone with the MirrorLink™ by the connect menu he gets access to his apps. On the dashboard display of the radio system, he can see and use his apps via touchscreen.
The connect menu of the Multimedia Radio Touch and his voice recognition allows for convenient and driver-friendly use of the smartphone that is also safe while driving. The Mercedes-Benz driver can thus experience the world of iOS and Android in their truck while on the move, too.
