By this summer, The Fate of the Furious movie will have been and gone, but viewers looking for yet more high-octane action can get another fix from director Edgar Wright’s upcoming movie. Baby Driver is about a young getaway driver named, yes, Baby, doing one last job. Two trailers for the film are now online, and they make it look like Drive with a sense of humour. The film premieres in the UK on August 16.
The twist here is that a car accident as a child leaves Baby with a constant ringing in his ears. He constantly listens to music to drown out the sound. For filmgoers, this plot point provides a reason for a seemingly amazing soundtrack for accompanying the high-speed action.
A getaway driver needs a vehicle that’s both fast and can blend in. Baby’s car of choice appears to be a late model Subaru WRX, but trailers also show him in a US-market Chevrolet Avalanche and Dodge Challenger.
Wright assembles an impressive cast for his car chase movie. Kevin Spacey plays the threatening crime boss. Plus, Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm portray a pair of robbers. Ansel Elgort stars as Baby, and Lily James from Downton Abbey plays his love interest.
Wright is best known as the director of the behind the Cornetto Trilogy of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. His body of work shows that he’s quite adept at combining laughs and action.
While the idea of a crook running into problems on a final job isn’t a very original concept, we like Wright’s spin on the well-trodden plot. Combining cool cars doing impressive stunts while great music plays piques our interest. It looks great in the trailers, too.
