Online service aims to match gig-goers with homeowners in battle of the parking spaces
Ever struggled to find a parking space ahead of a gig? An estimated 24 million of us attended concerts in the UK in 2016 - and that figure is set to rise as the music industry continues to grow.
In a bid to reduce this pressure, an online parking service is encouraging homeowners keen to make some extra cash to rent out their unused spaces, thus helping gig-goers enjoy a stress-free night out.
A key sticking point in many towns and cities is that few venues are able to offer parking facilities of their own, which leads to the predictable scramble for a space at a premium price. The online service, YourParkingSpace.co.uk, claims to offer a more civilised way of finding place to park for a sensible sum by matching homeowners with visitors.
It’s easy to underestimate the problem, but a good example is West London’s famous Hammersmith Apollo, which is based in a largely residential area. Hosting the likes of Status Quo, Placebo and Billy Joel the venue can hold over 5,000 people on a single evening. Renting out unused parking spaces for £10.00 a day has proven to be an attractive solution for residents. Visiting music fans travelling to unfamiliar locations have also benefited, thanks to the ability to plan ahead of without the worry of where to park and how much it will cost.
Founded in 2013, in the past 18 months online marketplace YourParkingSpace.co.uk has raised £250,000 in seed investment, signed a 15-month partnership with NCP, and began offering hourly and daily pre-booking at car parks and parking spaces nationwide. It facilitates parking on driveways, private off-street parking spaces, lock-up garages and spaces from commercial car park operators.
