I.D.
On-Sale Date: 2020
Volkswagen revealed its first I.D. concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, kickstarting the octet of EV concepts we know today. Using VW's modular MEB architecture, the entry-level I.D. concept uses a 48-kilowatt-hour battery pack, generating a range of 205 miles, while the top-end I.D. promises an 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a range of more than 370 miles.
Good news is, nearly all of those proposed figures should carry over to the production model, along with either 7.2 -kilowatt or 11-kilowatt onboard chargers, and 125-kW DC fast charging capabilities. The bad news is, the ID hatchback is a Euro-exclusive model, meaning more forbidden fruit for other parts of the globe particularly our American friends (for now).
I.D. Crozz
On-Sale Date: 2020
The original I.D. Crozz debuted at Auto Shanghai 2017. The following September, Volkswagen dressed up the concept with a new red paint job, and unleashed it to crowds in Frankfurt, now with a pair of electric motors producing 302 bhp. The I.D. Crozz, as well as the European I.D. hatchback and the I.D. Roomzz, will go on sale internationally in 2020.
I.D. Roomzz
On-Sale Date: 2021
The aptly named I.D. Roomzz is Volkswagen's largest electric concept to date. The three-row, 280-mile EV debuted at Auto Shanghai 2019, using VW's MEB modular architecture and wielding a 302 bhp, 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack. After the I.D. hatchback and I.D. Crozz, the I.D. Roomzz is scheduled for an on-sale date of mid-2021.
I.D. Buggy
On-Sale Date: 2022 (Maybe)
The I.D. Buggy is one of Volkswagen's newest electric concepts. The adorable, open-top cruiser debuted at the Geneva Motor Show this year, packing a 62-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack producing 201 bhp and 258 pound-feet of torque. It's the quickest I.D. concept, able to sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 7.2 seconds.
If (and that's a big if) VW decides to produce the I.D. Buggy, it would be a limited, likely expensive halo EV. Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh said: “I think [I.D. Buggy is] a good brand halo and I think it's a good brand building opportunity.” Assuming it gets the green light, we expect an on-sale date for the I.D. Buggy of 2022 at the earliest.
I.D. Buzz
On-Sale Date: 2022
The Buzz is by far Volkswagen’s most talked about I.D. concept. It’s pretty much exactly what people want: a reborn, battery-powered Microbus. Unfortunately, it won’t arrive until 2022. When it does show up, the Buzz should have a driving range anywhere between 270 miles to 340 miles, and up to 369 bhp depending on the battery pack. Battery options will vary from an entry-level 48-kilowatt-hour battery pack, all the way up to an 111-kilowatt-hour unit.
I.D. Buzz Cargo
On-Sale Date: 2022
The I.D. Buzz Cargo isn't much different from the standard Buzz bus. It uses the same 48-kilowatt-hour and 111-kilowatt hour battery packs, with up to 340 miles and 369 bhp, with all-wheel drive. But the Buzz Cargo ditches the base Buzz's rear windows, and reconfigures its interior for industrial and commercial use. Like the Buzz, the Cargo model could arrive as a trim level in 2022.
I.D. Vizzion
On-Sale Date: 2022
While the Buzz, Crozz, and Roomzz all appeal to an SUV-centric audience, the I.D. Vizzion promises that same EV tech in a saloon. Underneath the low-slung four-door's sheet metal is Volkswagen's MEB platform and a 111-kilowatt-hour battery pack. VW says the Crozz returns "up to 650 kilometres" (400 miles) based on the European test cycle, and produces 302 bhp. The I.D. Vizzion will join the second half of VW's I.D. expansion, joining the lineup in 2022 alongside the Buzz.
I.D. R Pikes Peak
On-Sale Date: ???
Volkswagen unleashed the fully electric, 680-bhp ID R concept on Pikes Peak in 2018. And in just one run, the sleek concept shattered Peugeot's overall hill climb record by a momentous 17 seconds and was the first vehicle to complete the course in under eight minutes. VW recorded a record lap time of 7:57.148. It'll soon make a run at the Nurburgring, too.
We know Volkswagen probably won't offer the I.D. R to consumers. But we say, why not? A limited run, six-figure VW supercar couldn't hurt businesses. If anything, it might entice the few uber-wealthy customers to take a closer look at the ID vehicles actually happening.
